The
Anti-Poverty Committee
Downtown
Vancouver is an appropriate home of the Anti-Poverty Committee whose
mission is to benefit the city’s homeless population. Started
ten years ago by a group of concerned citizens, themselves homeless,
Anti-Pov has been helping people that live on the streets access services
such as welfare, homeless shelters, and social housing ever since.

The
BC Hydro affair: A powerful con job
On
October 6th, 2003, a rally against the policies of Gordon Campbell’s
Liberals took place in downtown Vancouver. Under a gray sky and an autumn
rain too few people came out despite the discussion of critical issues
that took place. Among others was the privatization of the hydroelectric
system, which is a central issue for the BC as well as the rest of Canada.

WAVAW
Women Against Violence Against Women
In
the early eighties, a group of Vancouver women reacted to a situation
of exclusion and created WAVAW in order to provide services for all
women who are the survivors of sexual assault. Previous services didn’t
include sex trade workers, bisexual women, lesbians, or trans-gender
women who receive higher rates of sexual assault than other women. The
founding mothers believed that all women who survive a sexual assault
need to be supported.

PEDAL
is one part responsible for the movement of a mechanism that has multiple
parts. It is a mother organization that rides hard for the development
and promotion of pedal powered technology use and the ride is just getting
started. Other parts that go around with every stroke of PEDAL are Our
Community Bikes, Pedal Works, and Maya Pedal.
